UK homestays and safety-checked host families

When school is closed, English Country Guardians can arrange for students to stay in a home near their school. They will be cared for by a host family. This is known as a “homestay”.

Your child's home away from home

Hosts provide a warm and loving atmosphere to look after students when they aren't at school. A host family is different from a guardian.

  • A host family offers a friendly welcome and a safe, caring environment where an international student can stay and expect to be treated as part of the family during their time away from school.
  • A guardian is a professionally trained, accredited professional who acts more like a helper and a problem solver.

When do international students go to their homestay family in the UK?

When international students come to the UK for boarding school, they will stay at school during term time. However, there are a few occasions during the year when schools are closed or students might not be able to fly home.

Homestays are a convenient option for times such as these:

  • Half term, which is usually in October, February and May.
  • End of term holidays in March, June and December.
  • Special weekends during the year called exeats or leave weekends.
  • An occasional night before or after travelling home, depending on flights.
"I am so grateful to have stayed with such an incredible host. My host is a really kind person who has taken care of me and taught me a lot of things such as English table manners! Also, the house is really clean and food is delicious."

Staying with a host has given me a chance to meet new people - which has improved my language a lot and given me different experiences which I wouldn't have at school."

What are English host families like?

With so much variety in the UK, there is no “typical” host family.

Some of our hosts are grandparents, many have children or pets, and others are couples who don't have any children of their own. We also have hosts who have lived overseas, and some have attended boarding school themselves when they were younger.

What do they all have in common? Each one understands the needs of international students and will ensure they balance their time between studies and enjoying quality, relaxing breaks getting out to explore England while they are here.

Hosts are committed to helping and caring for overseas students

We work with dozens of host families across the UK who welcome international students with open arms and provide a supportive home away from home.

The host families that English Country Guardians work with are:

  • Selected for their skills, hobbies and interests including cooking international cuisine!
  • People we would want to stay with ourselves and trust with our own children.
  • Looking to help international students settle into their British education.
  • Outstanding citizens with the highest credentials and police clearance.
  • Knowledgeable of the British education system.
  • Internationally minded and globally curious.

"When staying with my host family, I really enjoyed meeting new people.

Meeting different people in my life has shaped my view of the world as being so colourful - although we have different ways of thinking and different cultures, we all grow by learning from each other.

I must say homestay was a very memorable time in my first term study."

Benefit from our UK-wide network of host families

For your child’s convenience, we aim to place them with a host family that is located as close as possible to their boarding school. Above all, the most important thing is for all our students to feel at home throughout their school years in the UK.

Our experienced team will find a host family to best suit each international student - both in terms of interests and location.

And as part of the Academic Families group, our greater network of host families extends all across the UK and includes families living in cities, towns and rural areas which is ideal for longer holidays giving your child the chance to explore the UK.

Homestays offer a true British experience

All of our hosts understand the needs of children and teenagers, and will ensure your child doesn’t spend all their time in bed, studying, or on their phone. In addition to a warm and welcoming environment, your child can expect the following:

  • Their own bedroom or the option to share with a friend or sibling.
  • A quiet space to study.
  • Internet access.
  • Full board – 3 meals per day.
  • Drinks and snacks between meals if required.
  • Some entertainment provided by the host family.
  • Regular contact with English Country Guardians.
  • Group activities and excursions organised by English Country Guardians.

Would your child benefit from revision courses or private tutoring during term breaks?

As part of the Academic Families group, our English Country Guardians programme fully supports you and your child with all the local assistance you require year round. In addition to our host family services, for those students who would benefit from some extra academic support, we also offer English or exam revision courses.
